Departmental Excellence in Teaching Award Reception for the Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences
Held April 17, 2009 at the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center
The Teaching Academy Departmental Excellence in Teaching Award is presented in recognition of a department or comparable academic unit that has made unique and significant contributions to the teaching mission of the University and has esprit de corps in its dedication to the education of students at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional level. The Award, given as merited, carries a $25,000 prize, to be used for the enhancement of teaching in any way the department determines. The general criterion for the Award is the existence of a “teaching culture,” which reflects commitment to students, makes teaching a high departmental priority, and facilitates teaching excellence throughout the department. The year’s recipient was the Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences. Our honored guests included Dr. Rob Stewart, Interim Senior Vice Provost; Dr. Lawrence Schovanec, College of Arts & Sciences Interim Dean; Dr. David Roach, College of Arts & Sciences, Associate Academic Dean; Dr. Terry Waldren, HESS Interim Chair; HESS Faculty; Dr. Debbie Laverie, TLTC Director; Dr. Roman Taraban, Teaching Academy Executive Council Chair; DETA Selection Committee members Dr. Steve Fraze (Chair), Dr. Liz Hall, and Dr. Robin Lock; TLTC staff.
